“…Because they make it hard for us and because they do not allow us access and they do not make themselves readily available for interviews… we look around, we ask around and alas, we stumble upon deeper angles and most of the time, the real story behind the stories.

When instances like these happen, when we get stories like that, we don’t see them laughing.

We see some of them pull strings and we also hear them yell: STOP THE PRESS!”

President, pauper

“If you’re a pauper, your wife hears you saying, “Hello, Grace,” you will be angry and act innocent. If you’re a president, your country hears you saying, “Hello, Garci,” you will be angry and act innocent. If you’re a pauper and your wife hears you plotting to cheat with Grace, you will say she is an eavesdropper and order her to mind the kitchen. If you’re a president and your people hear you plotting to cheat with Garci, you will say they are eavesdroppers and order them to mind their business. If you’re a pauper and your wife finds you in bed with Grace, you will demand to know what’s wrong with it since you were just out to protect her breasts. If you’re a president and your country finds you in cahoots with Garci, you will demand to know what’s wrong with it since you were just out to protect your votes.”

Nag-iisip…

July 18, 2005

Paeng writes:

Roads

Conrado de Quiros writes:

“WATCHING GMA (Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo) last week tell the world with a straight face that it wasn’t a matter of popularity, she had the vision, her enemies could only lead the country down the road to nowhere, I saw Marcos. That is one of the many things they have in common. Marcos could lie with conviction. It wasn’t just that he was a good liar, it was that he actually believed his lie. He had internalized it to a point that it took on the aspect of truth etched in tablet-or in his mind. GMA is like that, too.”

GMA impeach raps to focus on governance, not just tapes

The impeachment complaint against President Arroyo will not only focus on allegations of cheating in the 2004 elections but the evaluation of her four-year governance, San Juan Rep. Ronaldo Zamora said Monday.

“[The impeachment complaint] is based upon President Arroyo’s four years of governance,” Zamora told DZMM in an interview.

Zamora said lawmakers are looking at all of six grounds of impeachment provided in the constitution.

The sovereign will of the people

Isagani Cruz writes:

After carefully considering the pros and cons of the current conflict, I now believe that President Arroyo has forfeited her right to her present position, assuming she was entitled to it in the first place.

Bishops dare GMA: Address issues of ‘morality, integrity, competence’

“The (pastoral) statement was written by your pastors and must be read with thoughtfulness because the guidance it provided was never meant to be an apologia for the President as some would like to claim it is,” Rosales stated in a circular released and read during a regular Mass said before priests and the faithful of the archdiocese of Manila.

According to him, the CBCP pastoral statement was “in fact a decisive moral challenge to the highest leadership in the land” since the meat of the statement focused on the issue of morality.

“This pastoral statement was written as a pastoral guidance for the faithful in the midst of political turmoil while struggling still for development and longing to be a united people,” the circular said.

Furthermore, the archbishop stressed, the CBCP statement centered on the “moral accountability, personal intergrity and competence” of the Arroyo government.

Yung dagdag, yung dagdag

“THE president’s voice sounded urgent. She was muttering under her breath. This morning, using sound enhancement, we listened again to the “Hello, Garci” recording and heard clearly for the first time what Mrs. Arroyo told election commissioner Virgilio Garcillano in a conversation that took place at 11:17 p.m. on May 31, 2004.

That phone call began with the President relaying to Garcillano the information that the opposition was trying to get Namfrel (National Citizens Movement for Free Elections) copies of municipal certificates of canvass. Garcillano reassured her that Namfrel is “now sympathetic to us.”

The president’s reply is garbled in the recording, as she lowered her voice and muttered. We asked a sound engineer to enhance the sound for us. We listened again and this is what we heard her telling Garcillano: “… Namfrel does not tally…pero yun nga, yung dagdag, yung dagdag (but you know, the padding, the padding).” ”

Watch out for the Renegades

“What do the renegades have? They have answers — answers to questions that GMA has since managed to sweep under the rug, as it were. How much did the government spend in the last few months leading to election for projects that were intended to boost the President’s candidacy? How much of these expenditures would have been recouped by the VAT Law? How could they have thought of spending all that money for the President’s re-election bid and taking it back in the form of taxes right after? Was that the reason why former Finance Secretary Camacho resigned in the months before the election?”

2 more Cabinet execs quit

“PRESIDENT Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo lost two more key aides as her advisers on investments and on good governance and poverty alleviation, have resigned from their posts, according to reports culled by INQ7.net.

Victoria Garchitorena, the President’s senior adviser on good governance and poverty alleviation, cited the “Hello Garci” wiretapped tapes as the reason for her resignation.

Cora Guidote, Arroyo’s consultant for investor relations, also resigned, Malacañang announced earlier on Monday but gave no reason for leaving her post.”
